Controlling Silica Exposures in Construction

Release Date: May 29, 2009

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has released a new publication entitled Controlling Silica Exposures in Construction. The publication provides information on the effectiveness of various engineering control approaches for several kinds of construction operations and equipment and contains recommendations for work practices and respiratory protection, as appropriate.

The document is divided into nine sections that cover different construction operations. Eight are for specific equipment or operations:

The sections offer information, advice, and recommendations on using wet methods, vacuum dust collection (VDC) systems, and work practices to control dust emissions from construction operations. The recommendations presented in the document are based on a review of information in the published literature, NIOSH In-Depth Survey Reports and OSHA inspection data, including experience gained from OSHA's Special Emphasis Program on Silica.

The publication is available from the OSHA Web-site at http://www.osha.gov/Publications/3362silica-exposures.pdf. Additional information on silica is available from the OSHA Safety and Health Topic page at http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/silicacrystalline/index.html.
