The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has released a new 104-page publication covering nanotechnology. NIOSH has developed this document to provide an overview of what is known about nanoparticle toxicity, process emissions and exposure assessment, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment.
Nanomaterials have the greatest potential to enter the body through the respiratory system if they are airborne and in the form of respirable-sized particles (nanoparticles). They may also come into contact with the skin or be ingested. For most processes and job tasks, the control of airborne exposure to nanoaerosols can be accomplished using a variety of engineering control techniques, similar to those used in reducing exposure to general aerosols.
The document, NIOSH Publication No. 2009-125, Approaches to Safe Nanotechnology, Managing the Health and Safety Concerns Associated with Engineered Nanomaterials, published March 2009, is available at http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2009-125/pdfs/2009-125.pdf
