The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has published a new "Safety and Health Topics" Web page on nanotechnology (http://www.osha.gov/dsg/nanotechnology/nanotechnology.html). The site is aimed at businesses that deal with nanomaterials and lists the health risks that may be related to nanotechnology, as well as applicable OSHA standards.
The Web page covers the following:
Other key governmental Web sites providing occupational safety and health information on nanotechnology include:
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is supporting nanotechnology research while evaluating its regulatory responsibility to protect the environment and human health. The EPA site (http://es.epa.gov/ncer/nano/) provides information on related research at EPA and other organizations.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the leading federal agency conducting research and providing guidance on the occupational safety and health implications, and applications, of nanotechnology. The NIOSH Web site (http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/nanotech/) covers research on answering the questions that are essential to understanding these implications and applications, including:
The National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) is the program that was established in fiscal year 2001 to coordinate Federal nanotechnology research and development. Today, the NNI consists of the individual and cooperative nanotechnology-related activities of 25 Federal agencies with a range of research and regulatory roles and responsibilities. Thirteen of the participating agencies have R&D budgets that relate to nanotechnology, with the reported NNI budget representing the collective sum of these. The NNI, as a program, does not fund research; however, it informs and influences the Federal budget and planning processes through its member agencies. The NNI Web site is at http://www.nano.gov/html/about/home_about.html.
