Teen Workers – Safety in Construction

Working teens, aged 16-17 years, are working in the construction industry, or on construction sites, in limited capacities. There are restrictions that every employer and every teen should know that are delineated at the Department of Labor’s (DOL) “Employment Laws Assistance for Workers and Small Businesses (elaws)” found at http://www.dol.gov/elaws/youth.html.

Recently, The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published a new Web page, entitled “Teen Workers: Construction, Build a Safe Work Foundation.” Information is presented to the teen worker (and potential employer) covering the following areas:

• Safety and Health
• Industry Standards
• Appropriate Jobs
• On-The-Job Hazards
• Tools and Equipment
• Motor Vehicle Safety
• Career Choices

The Web site provides teens with safety working tips and links to a multitude of valuable information they should know to work safely; it would also be of benefit to any employer hiring teens for construction work.
