October 2006 - New Fact Sheet on Fall Prevention for Aboveground Storage Tanks

Release Date:

October 9, 2006

Fall Prevention for Aboveground Storage Tanks is a new fact sheet from the Safe Tank Alliance, an alliance of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), American Petroleum Institute (API), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), that seeks to encourage safe working practices in the petroleum industry. The fact sheet describes how to ensure employee safety when working in and around aboveground storage tanks by recognizing fall hazards, developing prevention priorities, and using protective equipment.

The fact sheet encourages prevention by using equipment, like guardrails, stair rails, travel restraint systems, safety nets, arrest systems (harnesses), self-retracting lifelines/lanyards, and ladder safety devices, that help keep the individual from falling and avoid a hard landing if they do fall.

A copy of the fact sheet can be downloaded from the following Web site: www.api.org/ehs/health/upload/fall_prevention_factsheet.pdf.
