Bituminous' information technology (IT) staff is critical for corporate success and is centrally located in the Rock Island, IL home office. Software Engineer
The software engineer (mainframe and PC) will participate in all levels of the application development life cycle including requirements definition, analysis, systems design, documentation, coding, testing and support. Applications are developed and maintained using a variety of programming languages.
PC/LAN Technician
The PC/LAN technician will provide technical support of hardware and software for multi-state networking/communications which includes the use of various hardware and software platforms.
Word Processing PC Operator
The word processing PC operator develops and maintains applications for internal customers using various document and form creation software. |
Underwriting
Bituminous underwrites workers compensation, general liability, commercial automobile and commercial property lines for selected business and industry at the core of the American economy. Underwriters in Bituminous branch offices work directly with independent insurance agents to select our customers and to determine policy conditions and pricing. Administrative and technical support are provided by home office underwriting.

Commercial Insurance Underwriter
The underwriter's goal is to provide professional responses to our agents/customers within a reasonable amount of time. To do this underwriters should possess analytical and negotiation skills, be good communicators and be capable of making sound decisions.
Underwriting Trainee
The position of underwriting trainee can lead to a career as a commercial lines underwriter. Training begins in the Rock Island, IL home office. There our trainees learn basic underwriting principles and gain customer knowledge while working with our specialized niche market programs. Trainees gain insight into the full cycle of commercial lines underwriting through interaction with our knowledgeable professionals from underwriting, premium audit, claims and risk control.
After the initial training period, which is normally less than one year, the trainee transfers to one of our branch office locations to benefit from on-the-job experience with our professional branch office underwriters. Next comes the exciting challenge of handling your own territory with sales and underwriting responsibilities and the opportunity to progress along the Bituminous underwriting career path.

Risk Control
Field risk control consultants assist our customers in their safety efforts. Risk control supervisors provide guidance and support to the field risk control staff. Some field risk control consultants work from their homes, others from a service or branch office. All risk control positions require good communication and problem solving skills along with a strong “service attitude.” Frequent overnight travel is a vital customer service component of all risk control positions.
Risk control consultants visit customers at their premises and job sites to survey their operations. The risk control consultant is responsible for evaluating loss exposures and recommending solutions to management. Risk control consultants report their findings to Bituminous underwriters. The risk control consultants also work with some customers periodically to assist them in developing their safety practices and policies.

Efficient and fair claims handling contributes significantly to Bituminous’ reputation for exemplary service. Claims representatives in our branch office locations are supported by an experienced home office staff.
These positions require good communication skills, the willingness to travel and the ability to make strong business decisions.

Premium Audit
On many policies, the final premium is determined by an actual audit of the customer’s records. Premium auditors in our branch office locations work with customer records on location and forward the audit to the home office where the audit billing is prepared.
The premium audit department at home office trains field auditors and provides continuing technical assistance. These positions require frequent travel, a strong “service attitude” and good communication skills.
